Latest Allotments Update at 26th September 2007

The Allotment Management Committee is preparing a Welcome pack for new allotment holders. Further details will be published when confirmed. In the mean time, follow the Welcome pack's development through the Committee Minutes at 'Current Minutes' and the archives. For the moment the approved chairman's opening letter.

BERKHAMSTED’S ALLOTMENTS

In Berkhamsted we have three statutory allotment sites comprising a total of some 375 plots, each site being independent but with the plot holders working together to ensure the sites are well-ordered and run very much as they wish.

Overall responsibility is that of the Town Council, in particular, the Allotment Management Team comprising councillors, and representatives of each site. In this way the Council is committed to fulfilling its duty as a responsible Allotment Authority. As well, the law puts an onus on allotment holders to pay a rent and to abide by the rules and guidelines of the authority and to maintain their plot properly.

This pack contains all the information you will need to enjoy fully the benefits of allotment gardening. Read it carefully, stick to the rules and have fun.

Malcolm Allen
Chairman, The Allotment Management Team

On 30th January 2006 Full Council approved and adopted a new Allotment Management Team constitution.  The constitution states that the AMT will meet in the Council Chamber two weeks before the date of each meeting of the full Town Council.  It also states that meetings will be open to the public and that the agenda will be published on Town Council notice boards in advance of the meeting.

All meetings will be held at 2.30pm in the Council Chamber.

The Agenda for each meeting will be published on the
Current Events page the Friday before, the Minutes as soon as possible afterwards. An archive of Minutes will be accumulated. These can be referenced from the archive page.

THE TRADITION OF ALLOTMENTS
The tradition of allotted plots of land for cultivation by individual townspeople dates back many centuries. Provision and maintenance of such allotments remains the statutory duty of the Town Council.

There are many reasons why people rent an allotment:
to grow 'real' organic fruit and vegetables
the pleasure of exercising their personal skills
provide their homes with fresh-cut flowers throughout the year
using their plots as nurseries for their home gardens
camaraderie with fellow enthusiasts
a pleasant way to stay fit and exercise
when one is not a 'natural' fitness fanatic!

Why don't you consider an allotment?

The Town Council has 25 acres of allotment land
on three sites around the town at:

SUNNYSIDE—Ivy House Lane and Netherfield Road

DELLFIELD—Billet Lane

BUTTS MEADOW—King's Road and Chesham Road

All sites are equipped with mains water pressure.
At Sunnyside they have a thriving allotment society
and even provide a very friendly tea hut, open daily.

RENT? Very low!
£1.30 a pole or 95.14 pence a sq. metre
(2006 prices
half-size plots are available)
