The Environment The environment is of very high priority to the people of Berkhamsted and so it is for the Town Council. The Transport and Environment Committee considers all local environmental matters, deal with those within its powers, and presses relevant authorities for action where a particular matters lies outside its power. Within the town, we are responsible for the Millennium Garden and the Gateway Garden, for Birtchnell’s Copse in Ivy House Lane. With the Borough Council, we were successful in obtaining the Green Flag Award for Canal Fields, and we have set up a Liaison Group involving not only Councillors, but also members of the public, to ensure that this area is properly maintained and developed for the benefit of the community. Realising that Berkhamsted could not make our planet green by itself, we have set up a Sustainability Working Party, which is examining ways in which people in the town can contribute, often saving money in the process. We shall publicise the results of their findings on this Website. We are also planning actions on road, pavements and parking (more details on the “Transport” page) and on recycling, litter and nuisance, and on the Berkhamsted Heritage. Future plans also include examining what can be done to improve the rear of premises on the car park area behind Tesco as far as the rear of the Town Hall. Please let us know if you have any other ideas. |
