Minutes of Last Meeting Wednesday 14th May

Present:

Youth Council – Alistair, Molly, Emily, Tom, Harriett, Elliott, Natalie, Ben, Jim as Observer

Clare Muir, Sue Lyus, Alex Ferguson, PCSO Thomas Montgomery, PCSO Ben McGregor

Apologies:- Amelia, Ruby, Jorge, Alex Ferguson

Clare read out letters from Chris who has felt the need to resign due to other pressures, and Nicole Conners who has changed jobs.

  1. The minutes of the meeting on 19 March 2008 were approved.

  1. Matters arising.
bulletCounsellor for Young People.  It is proposed to hold a pilot project for 6 weeks from Half Term till the Summer holidays with a Counsellor attending the Swan Youth Centre for one night a week.  The Extended Schools Consortium will fund this and if successful, members of the Youth Council who have expressed an interest, will help apply for continued funding.

  1. Treasurers Report.  There is £1821.35 in the bank and Clare presented the members with a year end printout showing all the expenses for the past year.

  1. St Georges Day Parade.  Alistair reported that the Scouts who organised this parade have donated £400 from the proceeds to the Swan Youth Centre.  Alistair also said that he presented a speech in the Church after the parade.

  1. Town Council Annual Meeting – Feed back.  Members who attended the event said that it was a good opportunity to showcase what they have been doing over the past year.

  1. Gigs. Dates for next gigs:-

·         16 May

·         13 June

·         11 July

Clare asked members in Ruby’s absence, whether they would like to hold another benefit gig to pay for Aids Awareness training for the young people in Wamba, North Kenya.  The Youth Council did a benefit gig a few years ago to raise money for resources for a primary school in Wamba.  It was agreed, but suggested to wait till the autumn as numbers attending gigs in the summer drop off.

  1. Video Project.  Molly fed back the minutes of the last meeting of the Video project and asked for different members to perform different roles.  A future meeting for this project has not been arranged yet.

  1. Late Night Travelling.  Since the last meeting, Elliot has done a lot of research into late night travelling, following his concerns that public transport is very unreliable and many young people have had problems getting home when buses don’t turn up.  The main concern is from Red Rose who put on buses after 7pm at the weekends and are very unreliable.  It was suggested that Elliott contact them and invite a representative to our next meeting.  It was also discussed that it would be good for young people to have a small credit card sized card with a few reliable taxis numbers on including ones who have female drivers.  The taxis could be asked to give a discount for any young person who shows them the card.  All members will look into reliable taxis firms by asking friends etc and bring numbers to the next meeting.

  1. The Berko / Tring Thing.  Following the last meeting, Tring will put together a poster and BYTC needs to sort out two members who will help compare the night with two Tring members.  It was suggested that anyone wanting to do this should prepare a 2-minute presentation for our next meeting and present to the other members.  2 will then be selected.  Ali, Ben and Jim want to do it and anyone else not at the meeting can put themselves forward.  Clare has found judges who are willing to help at the auditions and Final (but not famous)!!  Ben will come in a  write a letter that can be given to potential judges.

  1. Stanley Sharpe Award.  The criteria for this annual award was discussed and how it should be publicised.  Young people would be nominated for their contribution to their community and be publicised in the local press, schools, shop windows and notice boards.  It was felt that youth council members and reps from the Swan Trustees should be the judges.  There would be a financial reward for the winner to their project or charity of their choosing and a small voucher for themselves.  A date in to year to hold the event needs to be agreed.

  1. Police 10 Minute Slot.  Discussions about antisocial behaviour and graffiti took place.  Thomas will find out whether the police will fund summer activities for young people and an art project at the Skate Park.  Also from the last meeting the idea was raised about getting a small basketball/football pitch.

  1. Any Other Business

·         Summer Activities.  Discussions took place about whether the Youth Council would fund more activities this summer if the Police are not able to.  The trip to Thorpe Park and the Inflate Days were a great success last year and members agreed that they would like to run them again.

·         Summer Residential.  Members were given information about the summer residential to the Forest of Dean and told to secure their place soon as possible as places are running out.

·         Half Term Activities. Sue Lyus gave out information about different activities to be held at Ashlyns over the May half term.  Sue will bring flyers to the Swan to publicise.
