Youth Activities in Berkhamsted The members of Berkhamsted Youth Town Council are a voice for young people in Berkhamsted. Members consist of young people aged between 12 - 18 years who attend local schools and have been elected by their peers. They make sure that young peoples voices are heard in many aspects of their community life. The Youth Council members run regular gig nights at the Swan Youth Centre, carry out fundraising events to fund activities for other young people, and were very involved in campaigning for the skate park in Canal Fields. In December 2006, the Youth Council won a Skills Train Young People of the Year Special Recognition Award for their contribution to their community. The Youth Council is formally run with a chair, vice chair and treasurer, and members attend other organisations meetings as representatives of the Youth Council. They gain valuable skills and increased confidence by working as a team in organising activities, decision making, negotiating, budgeting skills, and communication skills when dealing with many different people. The skills they gain are all transferable and will prepare them for later life, making them very valuable members of their community The Youth Council meet once a month on a Wednesday at The Swan Youth Centre, 4.30 – 6pm, but also have sub groups, socials and other opportunities to get involved in. Youth Council reps attend Town Council meetings and there are opportunities to get involved in Youth Councils on a Borough, County and National level.
